Public Transport & MapsRabbit Card
Rabbit Card is the stored-value transport card of the BTS Skytrain in Bangkok, bought at station ticket offices and tapped at the gates instead of buying a paper ticket for every ride.
What it helps with
- Paying for BTS Skytrain without queueing for ticketsThe stored-value card is tapped at BTS gates, so there is no need to buy a single-journey ticket at the machine for every ride.
- Changing from MRT to BTSMRT gates take bank cards but BTS gates do not; a Rabbit card covers the BTS part of a trip after tapping out of the MRT.
- One card for a long stayThe card is valid for seven years and the balance stays for two years after the last use, so it can be reused on the next trip.
About Rabbit Card
Rabbit Card is issued by Bangkok Smartcard System, part of the BTS Group. It is used on the BTS Skytrain, which does not accept bank cards at its gates. The card costs a 100 THB issuing fee with no deposit, needs a top-up of at least 100 THB and can hold up to 4,000 THB. The card is valid for seven years, and the stored value expires two years after the last transaction.
Key Features
- Tap and go: The card is tapped at BTS gates and the fare for the distance is deducted.
- No deposit: Only the 100 THB issuing fee is paid on top of the balance.
- Long validity: The card works for seven years, so it can be kept for the next visit.
- Interchange use: It covers the BTS part of trips that start or end on the MRT.
How to Get Started
- Go to the ticket office at any BTS station.
- Ask for a Rabbit card and pay the 100 THB issuing fee plus a top-up of at least 100 THB.
- Tap the card at the gate on entry and exit.
- Top up again at the ticket office when the balance runs low.
Before you use it
- Sign-up: The card is issued at BTS station ticket offices, not at the ticket machines; allow time at the counter.
- Limits: Rabbit is for BTS-compatible travel; the MRT Blue and Purple Lines use bank cards and their own EMV cards instead.
- Good to know: Stored value expires two years after the last transaction, while the card itself is valid for seven years.
