Octopus
Hong Kong's ubiquitous contactless stored-value payment system, used far beyond transport for retail, vending and more. About Octopus: Originally launched for public transport fare payment, Octopus has grown into one of the world's most widely embedded contactless payment systems, accepted at convenience stores, supermarkets, vending machines, parking meters and many other everyday touchpoints across Hong Kong. Key Features: Universal Acceptance: Works for MTR, buses, minibuses and ferries as well as retail purchases at thousands of merchants. Tap-and-Go Speed: Transactions complete in under a second with a simple tap, no PIN or signature required for small amounts. Physical Card and App: Available as a traditional plastic card or through the Octopus app on supported phones. Auto Add-Value: Can link to a bank account or credit card for automatic top-ups when balance runs low. How to Get Started: Buy a physical Octopus card at any MTR station customer service counter or convenience store, or set up Octopus on your phone via the app. Add value using cash at add-value machines, or link a card for automatic top-ups. Tap the card or phone on any Octopus reader to pay for transport or retail purchases. Check your balance and transaction history through the app or at add-value machines. Important Notice: Physical Octopus cards carry a small deposit that is refundable when the card is returned, though a processing fee may apply depending on how long the card was held.
PayMe
HSBC's peer-to-peer payment app, widely used across Hong Kong for splitting bills and sending money between friends. About PayMe: PayMe from HSBC is one of the most widely adopted personal payment apps in Hong Kong, letting users send and receive money instantly using just a phone number, without needing to share bank account details. Key Features: Instant P2P Transfers: Send and receive money in seconds using a phone number or QR code. Bill Splitting: Group payment requests make splitting a restaurant bill or shared expense simple. Merchant QR Payments: Pay at participating retailers and online merchants directly from the app. No HSBC Account Required: Works for anyone with a Hong Kong phone number, not just existing HSBC customers. How to Get Started: Download the PayMe app and register with a Hong Kong mobile number. Link a supported bank account or credit card to top up your PayMe balance. Send money to contacts by phone number or scan a merchant QR code to pay. Set up split-bill requests for group expenses directly in the app. Important Notice: While not tied to an existing HSBC account, PayMe requires a Hong Kong phone number to register, so it is not usable by short-term visitors without a local SIM.
AlipayHK
The Hong Kong-specific version of Alipay, used for QR code payments, bill splitting and transport top-ups across the city. About AlipayHK: AlipayHK is a separate app and e-wallet from mainland China's Alipay, built specifically for the Hong Kong market and regulated locally, though it shares underlying QR payment technology with its mainland counterpart. Key Features: QR Code Payments: Pay at a huge network of local retailers, restaurants and markets by scanning or showing a QR code. Cross-Border Compatibility: Can be used to pay at many mainland merchants that accept Alipay's QR system, with automatic currency conversion. Bill Splitting and Transfers: Split group expenses or send money to other AlipayHK users. Transport and Utility Top-Ups: Top up Octopus balance or pay utility bills directly in the app. How to Get Started: Download the AlipayHK app and register with a Hong Kong phone number. Link a local bank account or credit card to fund your wallet. Scan a merchant's QR code or show your own code to pay in-store. Use in-app features to split bills, top up Octopus, or pay bills. Important Notice: AlipayHK is a distinct, separately regulated wallet from mainland Alipay — a mainland Alipay account does not automatically work in Hong Kong and vice versa.
