Central Asia's only metro system — a fast, cheap way to cross Almaty without traffic. About Almaty Metro: Almaty Metro is the only operational metro system in Central Asia, running a single line through the city with stations covering key central and southern districts, notable for architecture as well as function. Key Features: Single-Line Coverage: Runs through central Almaty, connecting major districts along one route. Fast and Traffic-Free: Bypasses Almaty's notoriously heavy road traffic entirely. Affordable Fares: A flat, inexpensive fare structure regardless of distance travelled. Card and Token Payment: Pay using a rechargeable card (Onay) or single-ride tokens at stations. How to Get Started: Locate the nearest metro station to your starting point. Purchase a token or use an Onay card at the station entrance. Board the train — note there's currently just one line, so navigation is simple. Exit at your destination station and continue on foot or by other transport. Important Notice: Almaty Metro currently covers only one line — for destinations outside its route, you'll need to combine it with buses, taxis or ride-hailing for the rest of the journey.

Almaty's rechargeable public transport card — the standard way locals pay for buses and metro across the city. About Onay: Onay is the rechargeable smart card system used for public transport payment in Almaty, covering the metro, buses and other public transit, replacing cash fares with a single reloadable card. Key Features: Single Card, Multiple Transport Types: Works across metro and bus networks with one card. Rechargeable Balance: Top up the card as needed rather than buying tickets for each ride. Discounted Fares: Card payment is typically cheaper than paying cash on board where cash is even accepted. Widely Accepted: The default payment method across Almaty's public transport network. How to Get Started: Purchase an Onay card from a metro station kiosk or authorized retail point. Top up the card with credit through the same kiosks, machines, or the Onay app. Tap the card at metro turnstiles or bus validators when boarding. Check your remaining balance periodically and top up before it runs low. Important Notice: Cash payment on buses is increasingly limited or unavailable in Almaty — an Onay card isn't just convenient, it's often necessary for reliable access to public transport.
