Octopus Card
The companion app for managing Hong Kong's Octopus stored-value card used across nearly all public transport. About Octopus Card: While the physical Octopus card itself is the everyday transport payment tool, this companion app lets card holders check their balance, view transaction history and manage add-value settings without needing to visit a station add-value machine. Key Features: Balance and History Check: View current balance and recent transactions, including transport fares and retail purchases. Card Registration: Register a card to protect its balance if lost, and to access more detailed transaction records. Nearby Add-Value Points Locator: Find the nearest station, convenience store or machine to top up cash value. Multiple Card Management: Track balances across several Octopus cards under one account, useful for families. How to Get Started: Download the Octopus Card app and create an account. Register your physical Octopus card by tapping it to your phone's NFC reader or entering its number manually. Check balance and transaction history any time from the app. Use the locator feature to find nearby add-value points when your balance runs low. Important Notice: This app manages and displays your existing physical Octopus card — it typically does not replace the card entirely for tap-and-go payments unless your phone supports Octopus's own separate mobile payment feature.
Citymapper
Multi-modal transit navigation app covering Hong Kong's MTR, buses, trams, minibuses and ferries in one journey planner. About Citymapper: Citymapper is an international transit app that covers Hong Kong's dense public transport network, combining MTR, buses, trams, green minibuses and ferries into a single set of route options with live arrival times where available. Key Features: Combined Route Planning: Suggests routes mixing MTR, bus, tram and ferry to find the fastest or cheapest option. Live Arrival Times: Where data is available, shows real-time vehicle arrival estimates. Walking and Cost Comparisons: Compares walking time, fare cost and total journey time across route options. Offline Access: Core route information can be accessed with limited or no data connection. How to Get Started: Download the Citymapper app and allow location access. Enter your destination to see a list of route options. Choose a route based on speed, cost or number of transfers. Follow step-by-step directions, including which platform or bus stop to use. Important Notice: Live arrival data coverage can be patchy for minibuses and some bus routes compared to MTR, so build in extra buffer time for connections involving those modes.
MTR Mobile
The official app of Hong Kong's MTR rail network, for journey planning, fares and service updates. About MTR Mobile: MTR Mobile is the official app of the MTR Corporation, which operates Hong Kong's entire metro network as well as some bus and light rail services, giving riders route planning, fare information and live service status in one place. Key Features: Journey Planning: Enter a start and end station to see route options, travel time and fare cost. Live Service Status: Real-time alerts on delays, disruptions or maintenance affecting specific lines. First and Last Train Times: Check station-specific first and last train schedules to plan late-night or early trips. Station Facilities Info: Find lift, toilet and exit information for accessibility planning. How to Get Started: Download the MTR Mobile app. Search your starting and destination stations to see route and fare options. Check the live status banner for any disruptions before travelling. Use station facility information if you need lift access or specific exits. Important Notice: Fare payment itself is still made via Octopus or a QR single-journey ticket at the gate — the app is for planning and status information, not for paying fares directly.
